North Carolina's
Jewish Mavens' Haven
LEWIS ERIC LACHTER
Special to The Jewish News
T
here are many reasons why
people are moving to the
"triangle" area of North
Carolina. Lots of tourists
are also attracted to the three cities
that make up the triangle: Raleigh,
Durham and Chapel Hill.
When touring, start with the Jew-
ish community in Raleigh. The
umbrella organization for the corn-
munity is Wake County Jewish Feder-
ation, 8210 Creedmore Road, Suite
104, Raleigh, NC 27613. The federa-
tion runs the full-service JCC of
greater Raleigh, Jewish Family Ser-
vices and it sponsors a wide variety of
social and educational programs. The
federation also publishes The Jewish
News and maintains a comprehensive
community calendar.
The JCC is located on 14.5 acres of
park. In addition to the main build-
-
ing, there is a large swimming pool,
playground, snack bar, good size lake
for boating and fishing, an outdoor
amphitheater, covered basketball
courts, soccer and baseball fields.
There are two Reform congrega-
tions in greater Raleigh: Temple Beth
Or, a well-established synagogue with
a wide range of religious, educational,
social and cultural functions; and
Beth Shalom, which is the newer con-
gregation. The Conservative shul is
Beth Meyer. The Lubavitch syna-
gogue is Congregation Sha-arei Israel.
Organizations in town include
B'nai B'rith, a senior social group
called the Chai Society and three
chapters of Hadassah. North Carolina
State University offers many activities,
has a sizeable Jewish faculty and an
active Hillel. Also, visitors may want
to check out the Museum of Jewish
Family and the activities at Duke
University.
Moving along the triangle to
Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federa-
tion, there is a fast-growing organiza-
tion and community. Located at 3700
Lyckan Parkway, Suite B, Durham,
NC 27707, the federation publishes
the Menorah, a newspaper that carries
news, views and a complete calendar
of local events.
The federation also publishes the
Shalom, Y'All Directory, a listings of
shuls, schools and organizations. Write
to the federation for a free copy.
The Judea Reform Congregation
in Durham dates back to 1961. Near-
ly 500 families belong. Beth El Syna-
gogue describes itself as both Conser-
vative and Orthodox; Congregation
Ohr Torah of the Jewish Learning
Experience is Orthodox. Both are in
Durham.
Newly formed Chapel Hill Kehilla
is the first congregation in Chapel
Hill. At this time, Shabbat services
are held twice monthly at Hillel on
the large campus of the University of
North Carolina.
The JCC runs the Triangle Jewish
Singles organization, and Prime Time
is for the 45-years-old-and-up group.
The University at Chapel Hill has
an extensive research collection of Jew-
ish materials and documents that cover

The Daycliance Approach
A Civil War monument in front of the 4.1

the entire Southern Jewish experience.
Eight miles from Chapel Hill is
Chatham County. In addition to the
large number of artists' studios that
can be toured, there is the village of
Fearrington with its gardens, walking
trails, shops and restaurants.
The county courthouse and its his- 1.0
torical museum are worth a visit.
Outdoor recreational activities
include biking, bird watching and
water sports ranging from fishing and
swimming to kayaking in the Haw
River. One could also take a walk
through the Jordan Lake Educational
State Forest.
There is a lot of Civil War and
110
Revolutionary War history in the
area. For example, there is the River-
front Plantation from 1772.
Between the lovely weather, scenic
beauty and cultural delights, North
Carolina is attracting more and more
visitors. ❑
