dates back to the 1700s. Just like the
sailors who developed the artform, now
limited because of protected species leg-
islation, Cohen, a retired physics pro-
fessor, etches designs into whale teeth,
which are pure ivory, and later fills in
color. While ships, mermaids and other
sea images will be prominent in Ann
Arbor, he also has done Judaica, includ-
ing a synagogue piece in tribute to the
oemurdered Jewish Olympic athletes. The
seven artists holding licenses work with
a registered stock of material that came
into America before 1900.

Pottery
One-of-a-kind pieces combining
ooclay and fiber will be at Susan Fox
Hirschmann's booth. Using porcelain
with handmade paper and dyed reeds,
she tries to take clay into another
dimension by adding softness and
rhythm to fashion decorative objects.
Her artistry is inspired by being near
the water. As she offers ripple effects
with a palette of turquoise and rose,
Hirschmann completes larger vessels
0..wand wall pieces as well as miniatures.
Each piece is formed at a potter's
wheel and then expanded through
building and carving and adding addi-
tional materials.

second visit to Ann Arbor, she
involves herself with the elemental feel
of the items she will be showing. "The
informality of the work suits my
nature," Shankin said.

Perfume bottles shaped as flowers
and big sculptural pieces formed with
copper and bamboo suggest the vari-
ety of work that Richard Silver does in
his glass studio. Silver uses simple col-
oration because his approach is more
about form than it is about shading.
At his booth, Silver will show photos
of his line of Judaica, which he mar-
kets under the name Shardz, with fel-
