Beth El Youth
Receive Award
The Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit honored the
Temple Beth El Young People's Society
with the Walter E. Klein Youth Award.
The award recognizes outstanding
social action programming by area
youth groups.
The students earned the award for
work done during the newly estab-
lished Ellin and Harold Lawson Youth
Institute. During the Institute, the
students met with Danny Siegal, who
has made tzedakah his life's work, and
Ranya Kelly, the "Shoe Lady" of Den-
ver, who has saved hundreds of thou-
sands of new merchandise from
dumpsters for distribution to those in
need. The students then transformed
their learning into action by unload-
ing and sorting thousands of articles
of winter clothing, shoes, baby goods,
toys and dry goods at a Detroit ware- Imo
house for distribution to area shelters
and agencies.
Other Klein award winners were
the Youth Federation of Temple
Israel, second place; the Adat Shalom
Synagogue Youth and Education
Department, third place; and the Flint
Reform Temple Youth, honorable
mention.
The JCC presented the awards dur-
ing its annual meeting at Congrega-
tion Beth Shalom. Debbie Levin
chaired the award committee.
