read "Sinagoga." We walked up sever-
al floors to a door with a hidden key.
Dr. Levi opened the door to one of
the most spiritual and lovely sanctuar-
ies I have yet to see. The ceiling,
painted dark blue with little stars, did
not darken the beautiful gold ark.
I could almost hear the men's voic-
es in prayer; there was a peacefulness
that was palpable. The aron kodesh
was a "walk-in closet," empty of
Torahs. We walked through the
women's section with thick glass look-
ing in to the sanctuary. Around the
back was a magnificent view of the
mountains of Mondavi. The entire
building had been the ghetto in the
1600s and the porch was a breath of
fresh air for the Jews who had been-
housed there.
I couldn't help but remember the
many Jews who had come through
town when I was a girl in New Mexi-
co. I understood the'need of one Jew
finding another, sharing history and a
sense of family.
While vacationing, you should seek
out Jewish roots, which you will find
almost everywhere you go. The people
you meet and the places you see will
be unforgettable. ❑
OPINION
PALESTINIANS NEED
from page 32
requirements. They have done nothing
to indicate that they have undergone
the change of heart so necessary for
peace. Their covenant still calls for
destroying Israel; their spokesmen still
call for jihad against Israel, and terror-
ists who were supposed to be extradit-
ed have been given the red-carpet
treatment in Arafat-land.
Nabil Sharihi, the terrorist whose
bomb killed Alisa Flatlow, a young
New Jersey woman, near Gaza in
1995, is living freely and comfortably
in Palestinian Authority territory. So is
Abu Abbas, the mastermind of the
Achille Lauro hijacking in which Leon
Klinghoffer was killed. The terror
bomber Nafex Sabih is enjoying
Arafat's hospitality, while the families
of the victims of his 1995 Jerusalem
bus attack, including fiancees
Matthew Eisenfeld (of Connecticut)
and Sara Duker (of New Jersey) have
received no justice.
The failure of the Palestinian lead-
ership to change their hearts — or to
change their ways — has served as a
model for the Palestinian masses to
likewise cling to their old hatred of
Israel. In the "Palestinian street," one
finds no sign of any change of heart.
The maps in schools and offices show
all of Israel as "Palestine;" and no
Arabs object to them. The children's
Oslo Accords
were designed to
test Palestinian
intent.
Here's some good news. During the last five years, A.G. Edwards Focus
List stock recommendations outperformed the S&P 500 Index.* Here's
some better news: This performance was achieved without taking on
undue risk, which means that even in today's uncertain markets, your
investments have a better chance at avoiding a bumpy ride.

programs on Palestinian television
urge Palestinian kids to grow up to be
suicide bombers and no Arab protes-
tors picket the television studios. Polls
of Palestinians — such as those taken
by the prominent Palestinian polling
agency, the Jerusalem Media and
Communication Center — find large
numbers of Palestinians still support-
ing violence against Israel.
For there to be any hope of achiev-
ing peace, the Palestinians must
undergo a genuine change of heart.
That change has to start at the top,
with Arafat and other Palestinian offi-
cials proving their interest in peace by
changing the covenant, halting their
incitement and extraditing terrorists to
Israel.
