Saperstein and her husband, Alvin,
a physics professor at Wayne State
University, live in downtown Detroit's
Lafayette Park and are members of the
Reconstructionist congregation
T'Chiyah (Rebirth). The 60 or so
conareaants
have no rabbi and run

services themselves. Saperstein credits
this affiliation with bringing her closer
to Judaism.
The couple have two daughters,
Shira in Maryland who works for the
Moriah Fund and has their two grand-
children, and Rina in Cincinnati, who
was married last weekend. They also
have six "children" who were interna-
tional exchange students living with
them over the years. The Sapersteins
recently returned from Europe where
they visited some of their "kids."
Beyond work and volunteer activi-
ties, 61-year-old Saperstein expends
her considerable energy by taking
long-distance bike treks with her hus-
band. When she retires, she says she
wants to join the Peace Corps.
But now she's content to continue
the good work in Highland Park.
With Perrin Emanuel, HP Devco vice
president, Saperstein is concentrating
on redevelopment of the Sears build-
ing, which closed in 1992. The eight-
acre site fronts Woodward Avenue and
