potential but never took off as expect-
ed.
DR. DOODLES, owned by Mar'ty
Eisner of 20 Grand note, and Mike
McClain, on Grand River and 10
Mile, had a very unusual menu ... It
was full of Dr. Doodles caricatures
introducing the items, Greek, Mexi-
can, Italian, American, Japanese, etc.
NIFTY NORMAN'S, South Com-
merce Road, Walled Lake, was a
warm, cozy Victorian pub that catered
to businessmen and shoppers at lunch,
family groups for dinner, and, later in
the evening, couples who came for the
action at Crackers Disco downstairs.
THE PRETZEL BELL, East Liber-
ty, Ann Arbor Since 1934, young
and old, the famous from worlds of
ducation, science, athletics, music
and theater enjoyed its informality ...
The bar dated back to Joe Parker,s
place in the 1880s, and a popular lun-
cheon buffet was offered amid brick
walls, over 600 Tiffany lamps, roaring
fireplaces and team photos from 1883
on ... Carving your initials in the table
tops was a tradition in this center for
students, faculty and alumni.
BERNARDI'S was the name of the
place that took over at the former site
of Ala Carte Cafe (now LeMetro) at
Applegate Square, Northwestern
Highway ... New owners were- Cheryl
and Bob Bernardi ... His parents,
Helma and Joe Bernardi, today own
Pepino's in Walled Lake.
WHEN HE HAD Sammy's

`Tea Time at Sammy's' from 3 to 5
p.m. ... with serving done in pure
bone China cups from a China tea
pot.
JOE CHUE'S House of Hunan
took over at the site of two former
delicatessens, Point After Deli and
Nosherie Deli, in the Racquetime
Center, 12 Mile east of Northwestern
ighway When asked why he did-
n't open a Jewish Chinese Deli-
catessen, Joe replied, "Did you ever
taste an egg roll made with chopped
liver?"
HARRY HARRIS' rendition of his
tune, "Put On A Smile" at the 24
Karat Club on Telegraph, was worth
the price of the evening ... When
arry was off stage, he went around
selling greeting cards to customers.
A DOUBLE-BARRELED evening
was the experience people used to get
at Duffy's on Cooley Lake Road ...
with a good dinner and the fine enter-
