Renewal Of Vows
Marks 69th Anniversary
Longtime Detroiters Lina and Iry
Small, now Florida residents, celebrated
their 69th anniversary and Irv's 90th
birthday at a party in Boca Raton host-
ed by their children.
A highlight of the party was the sur-
prise renewal of their marriage vows for
the fourth time. The couple's grand-
daughter, Kimberly Small, judge of the
48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills,
did the honors.
Party hosts were the Smalls' children:
Smart and Marsha Small of Boca
Raton; Michael and Ann Small of Palm
Beach; and Candace Steel of Troy. Party
goers included all nine grandchildren,
all six great-grandchildren, nieces,
nephews and friends.
The Smalls lived in Southfield's
North Park Towers before moving per-
manently to Florida. They were married
in 1929 when Iry was a Detroit College
of Law student and Lina was a Detroit
Conservatory of Music student.
They kept their marriage secret until
1931 when they were married in a reli-
gious ceremony in Owosso, Mich.,
Lina's hometown, hosted by her par-
ents, Joseph and Bessie Lebowski. Their
vows were again renewed at their 50th
wedding anniversary party hosted by
their children in West Bloomfield.
Before retiring, Iry was a local attor-
Lina and Iry Small
ney who was active in Republican Party
politics. He served as an assistant Attor-
ney General and as chairman of the
Detroit Welfare Commission.
Lina was active locally as a volunteer
for civic, charitable and religious organi-
zations. She was chairwoman of the
Detroit Roundtable of Christians and
Jews, president of the Temple Israel Sis-
terhood and president of the Home
Relief Society
Iry is known as "The Candy Man"
because he always carries a pocket full
of candy, which he lovingly hands out,
especially to small children.
