Included is Adat Shalom, which
will move its summer service up from
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 so host fam-
ilies can have dinner with their ath-
letes and still have an opportunity to
come to the synagogue, said Rabbi
Efry Spectre.
"We had many host families that
were involved in 1990 when the
Games were held here and as a syna-
gogue, we were involved then. We said
right away that we'd like to help."
Another congregation that was
eager to get involved is Young Israel of
Oak Park. Rabbi Steven Weil is a
Maccabi rookie, having never lived in
a community that hosted the Games.
"A lot of out congregants have gone
to other cities for Maccabi and had a
positive experience," Weil said. "We
wanted to give that to athletes who are
visiting here."
Young Israel, an Orthodox syna-
gogue, will have an Oneg Shabbat on
Aug. 21, as well. Weil credits Fay
Schriber, a member of the synagogue's
youth committee, for initiating the
Oneg.
"As long as they're here, we wanted
to give them a nice Shabbat," he said.
