atthew Gregory had
never set foot in
Hebrew school, but
when he met some
Israelis at a Boy Scout convention last
summer, he decided he wanted to
learn more about his Jewish heritage.
That goal led him to a National
Council of Synagogue Youth conclave
last month where the 14-year-old
from a small town in western
Washtenaw County celebrated an
impromptu bar mitzvah.
And that led Gregory to Israel. He
departed earlier this week — with six
Detroiters, five of whom are New
Americans — on a new NCSY tour
called The Jerusalem Journey.
An Orthodox-sponsored youth
group, NCSY organizes eight summer
programs each year. The Jerusalem
Journey, which is taking 50 teens from
around North America, is NCSY's
first summer program designed specif-
ically for unaffiliated teens, said

Regional Director Rabbi Tzali
Freedman.
"They'll see the country from top
to bottom and right to left, with an
emphasis on education," said
Freedman. "They'll be learning not
just about Israel's physical beauty, but
they'll get a sense of its politics, histo-
ry and the spirituality of the land."
NCSY Associate Regional Director
Rabbi Steven Burg, who recruited the
local teens, is staffing the month-long
trip. The trip costs $2,500, but almost
every participant is getting a scholar-
ship from.NCSY and the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Gregory's scholarship is through the
Jewish Federation of Washtenaw
County, said Freedman.
Although it is Orthodox, NCSY
has long been committed to reaching
out to unaffiliated youth, said
Freedman, who estimates that only
half the group's 200 local members
come from Shabbat-observant homes.
NCSY outreach includes following up
on referrals, sponsoring venues for
Jewish education, inviting teens to
