racial anti-Semitism grew from
Christianity's religious anti-Semitism,
and the Nazis justified their genocide
by citing ineffable racial differences.
Wine noted that at the beginning
of the 20th century, church propagan-
da accused the Jews of four sins:
Secularism, modernism, capitalism
and simultaneously, communism.
"We were undermining society.
Then the war came. Bolshevism was
the great enemy and the Jews were
perceived as part of the Bolshevik
conspiracy," he said. "Looking for
some way to fight communism, the
church found an alliance with fas-
cists."
Don Cohen, of the ADL said the
"statement calls Pope Pius XII coura-
geous, and credits him with saving
hundreds of thousands of Jews, but -
there's not enough evidence to support
the claim.
Rosenzveig said statements made
during the war showed Pope Pius XII
was reluctant to get involved because
"the Vatican believed Germany may
win the war, and the pope didn't want
to compromise his authority by pick-
ing sides."
Rosenzveig cited correspondence
between the State Department and the
Vatican. The American charge d'af-
faires wrote, "It is of universal opinion
of the diplomats who tried to talk to

the pope that it is of no avail. He will
not speak out in protest."
There were other reasons for disap-
pointment over the Vatican letter
issued in March, said Cohen.
"It took 11 years to develop, and
during that time it raised expectations
of what the document would say and
do, because of the statements made by
the bishops of France and Germany in
recent years," he said.
According to Rosenzveig, the
French bishop said in a statement,
"The church with considerable power
and influence called to play the role of
defender did not take a stand.
"We are obliged to admit the role
indirect and direct, played by com-
monly held anti-Jewish prejudice."
Cohen added, "The German bish-
op on the 50th anniversary of the lib-
eration of Auschwitz on Jan. 23,
1995, said, 'The church bears a co-
responsibility for the Holocaust.'
There was expectation that the Vatican
statement would at least match these
statements."
Wine said, "there were all sorts of
Roman Catholics who rescued Jews,
and even the pope offered some
refuge, but there was not one major
protest during the war on the part of
the Vatican."
He added, "If you're comparing this
statement to what happened in the
past, this is incredible progress. If
you're dealing with Jewish resentment
against the behavior of the church in
World War II at the time of the
Holocaust, then the statement is not
enough because the Vatican offered no
open and formal protest, even at the
time of the deportation of the Jews
from the city of Rome."
West, who confessed that he had
chucked his notes when it was his turn
to speak, left the audience with this
note:
"We beg G-d's pardon, and call
upon the Jewish people to hear our
words of repentance."
Dr. Paul Kerwin, an audience
member from West Bloomfield, said,
"There should be a Christian audience
to listen to this." El
