with the Israel Defense Forces when
he got "a taste of•what Israeli kids go
through in the army."
His somewhat hectic experiences
did not sour Anchill's taste for the
Jewish state; in fact, he is eager to
return and was particularly enthusias-
tic about the hiking. "All the places we
went were so great," he said.
Tenth-grader David Kaplan of
Flint's Carman-Ainsworth High
School enjoyed celebrating Jewish hol-
idays in Israel and learning more
about the army experience. Talia Salei,
an 11th-grader at North Farmington
High School, liked seeing how holi-
days are celebrated in Israel and get-
ting to know the other kids on the
program.
Although all said they were glad to
have lived in Israel and hoped to
return soon, the teens served up some
constructive criticism of the Project
Discovery program. Food provided on
campus was a subject of much com-
plaining, and Anchill claimed to have
lost weight as a result. He also wasn't
sure about the academic rigor: "We
learned a ton about Israel, but acade-
mically we're a little behind."
A variety of courses are offered to
meet requirements from students'
home schools, said Chana Hirschberg,
director of the American Israel High
School, an umbrella organization over-
seeing Project Discovery and similar
Israel programs.
Kaplan regretted that the partici-
pants did not have more opportunities
to interact with Israeli teens.
