much he'd bonded with his
friends from Project
Discovery until the day he
got home to Chicago.
Just two days after returning from
Israel earlier this month, the high
school junior was on the plane to
Detroit to spend the weekend with his
former classmates.
"I didn't expect to miss people as
much as I did," Block said, adding
that he will be returning to Israel this
summer.
Founded in 1989, Project
Discovery sends high school sopho-
mores and juniors to Jerusalem for
four months. The students live in
dorms at the Goldstein Youth Village,
the site of several programs for Jewish
teens from around the world. They
take Hebrew and core courses on
Israel and Jerusalem while keeping up
with regular academic course work.
In addition to the academics,
Project Discovery includes three weeks
of living with an Israeli host family,
field trips and a week on an army
base. Course credits are accepted at
local high schools, said Jill Keller of
the Michigan/Israel Connection,
which coordinates the program locally.
This year, 28 teens, 10 of them
from Michigan, participated in Project
Discovery. Two Michigan teens
dropped out during the semester and
Two opted to stay in Israel longer, one
to participate in the Teen Mission,
which left Detroit this week.
Michigan regularly sends 10 to 15
teens, said Keller.
At a Sunday afternoon barbecue
hosted by participant Jason Shanbaum
and his parents at their West
Bloomfield home, local Project
Discovery returnees — and Chicago's
Ben Block — talked about their
adventures from the recently complet-
ed semester.
Shanbaum, a tenth-grader at
Groves High School, liked staying
with his host family and visiting the
army base, where he had the opportu-
nity to try out an M-16 rifle at a
shooting range.
For Ben Anchill, a 10th grader at
West Bloomfield High School, the
most memorable part of the semester
was Shavuot, when he attended egali-
tarian services near the Western Wall
and was pelted by rocks and chocolate
milk by a group of Orthodox Jews.
Then there was the camping trip in
the desert, when he and his friends got
caught in a sandstorm. And the week
