ing in education, I was mowing the
lawn," he laughed.
With Patricia working as his secre-
tary at BAHM, and the children
attending Hebrew school there, the
synagogue became a second home for
the entire family, enabling them to
spend time together despite Levine's
hefty workload. "The years at Beth
Abraham were the years my kids grew
up," said Levine. "I was working a
million hours a day, but I had my
family with me the whole time. There
was not a line between my family and
my work."
Being his children's principal was-
n't always easy, though. Levine, who
taught his children their bar mitzvah
haftorahs, still feels bad about the
day he came down too hard on one
of his sons. "I was teaching a post-
bar mitzvah class that my son was
in, and he said there should be an
11th commandment, to honor thy
children," he recalled. "I thought he
was being a smart Alec and sent him
out of class. Later I realized I was
wrong and learned a very important
lesson. I owe a lot of respect not
only to other people's children, but
to my own."
In 1987, the Levines moved from
Livonia to West Bloomfield. Levine
remained part-time at BAHM and
took a leave of absence from Detroit
Public Schools to serve as interim sec-
ular principal at Akiva. In 1995, he
moved to Beth Achim.
"The fact that I survived so many
years as a religious school director is
amazing," said Levine. "You're under
so much pressure. I don't have the
temperament now_to fight with board
members, presidents and rabbis. I'm
trying to look out for the kids as a
whole, including those who no one's
lobbying for."
Despite the pressures and politics,
Levine said he "got real joy" from Jew-
ish communal work.
"There's something about helping
child love being Jewish that does
something for me," he said.
Levine cultivated a loyal staff of
Hebrew school teachers. Julie Margolis
has worked for him — as a secretary
and teacher — for 18 years.
"He's wonderful to work for," said
Margolis. "I'm going to miss the fact
that he's not in Jewish education."
Patricia, who said the humor can
"get on my nerves," warmly conceded
that she's married to a wonderful man
with "incredible energy."
"He's probably the most honest,
decent person I have ever met."
