order to enjoy a vacation in
rustic, quiet and tasteful sur-
roundings.
0 . For the same ambiance
found in rural France and Italy is
close by, in the Galilee village of
Rosh Pina.
While farming was once the main
occupation in Rosh Pina, now most
families earn their living by hosting
visitors from Israel and abroad.
Indeed, the village now boasts some
50 bed and breakfast establishments,
one of the most attractive of which
is Villa Tehilla.
Each of the Villa's 11 rooms has
its own special character, but all are
purposely old-fashioned, with the
kind of heavy wooden furniture and
patchwork quilts one finds in New
England. Also adding to the atmos-
phere are the framed "family pho-
tographs" on the walls of every
room. All feature the stiff poses
characteristic of the early 20th cen-
tury, and were presumably picked
up at European or Israeli flea mar-
kets.
The courtyard is paved with cob-
blestones and decorated with old
agricultural tools. These in turn are
surrounded by climbing vines and a
profusion of flowerbeds. Best of all,
visitors don't hear the sickly-sweet

Muzak background music that per-
vades the elevators and lobbies of
big-city hotels; instead they are sere-
naded by a constant chorus of song-
birds, who seem to have chosen the
Villa Tehilla for their annual con-
vention.
Unlike the proprietors of most
other bed and breakfast facilities in
Rosh Pina, Tehilla and Amichai
Israeli are relative newcomers, hav-
ing moved to the village from Tel
Aviv some 20 years ago. They were
both professional journalists at the
time, and first went to Rosh Pina to
visit a friend who was living there.
In a matter of hours, however, they
had fallen in love with the place and
decided to rent a home there.
Instead, they bought one.

The Galilee
Shangri-La now
boasts 50 bed
and breakfasts.

It wasn't so much a home as an
overgrown, dilapidated ruin. Yet in
the course of a few years, mostly by
their own labor, they turned that
ruin into a proper inn, which is now
booked out most of the time.
And as they were doing so, the
village itself underwent a transfor-
mation. Its entire upper section,
which had fallen into disrepair, was
restored to the way it had looked 80
years earlier, though with one major
