A class at JVS prepares for the work world.

waitress, came in and I immediately
saw in the interview that she was a
good customer person. So I hired her
as a customer service rep. Ultimately,
she became supervisor of that
department, and now manages
another," said Ashel.
Ashel and PPOM have also hired
Russian immigrants — at least 40
over the last 10 years. A few years
ago, PPOM was honored by JVS as
Employer of the Year.
This year's JVS Business Leader-
ship Award went to the Compuware
Corporation. Presenting the award,
luncheon subcommittee co-chair
Bernard Glieberman of Crosswinds
Communities praised Compuware for
being in the forefront of hiring Russ-
ian immigrants.
The other JVS Employees of the
Year were Diane Bryant of Detroit, a
houSekeeping technician at Wayne
State University, and Jason Kowalski
of Macomb Township, a new car
porter at Sterling Heights Dodge.
The four winners, all placed in their
jobs through JVS, were nominated by
their supervisors and selected by a
committee of community volunteers.
Rozenblat was the only Jewish winner
among the four.
Ms. Bryant, who has developmen-
tal disabilities, owes her success to the
JVS sheltered workshop, which teach-
es competitive work skills in a sup-
portive work 'environment.
Kowalski is a product of the JVS
School to Work program for high
School students with special needs.
Last year, JVS opened a satellite
office in Warren to provide rehabili-
tation services for Macomb County
residents:

JVS maintains its Woodward and
Canfield office in the Arnold E.
Frank Building near Detroit's cultur-
al center. Executive Director Nuren-
berg said JVS is one of just a few
sources providing outreach to the
Jewish elderly living in the central
core of the city. Including those in
after-care facilities, nursing homes
and single-room walk-ups, Nuren-
berg estimates their number at 125
to 135.
JVS also has a West Bloomfield
facility at the Jewish Community
Center. A JVS division, Detroit's
Work Place, has two locations in the
central city. Both.are full-service
career centers that also coordinate
access to government entitlement
programs for Detroit residents. The
division works in partnership with
the City of Detroit and community
and governmental agencies.
Other JVS programs help the
homeless, adults with attention
deficit disorder and care for at-risk
elderly adults.
The agency's numbers are impres-
sive. During the 1996/97 fiscal year,
JVS served 6,000 residents of Wayne,
Oakland and Macomb counties. In
the last year, that figure almost
tripled. JVS expects to serve about
17,000 clients by the end of the cur-
rent fiscal year.
JVS records do not break down
the number of Jewish and non-Jewish
clients served.
.
For Nurenberg, an important.
part of the JVS mission is being a vis-
ible Jewish presence in the city of
Detroit.
"The JVS sign on the building is
out there," she said.
