ladimir Rozenblat arrived
in the United States from
the former Soviet Union
with no job, no knowledge
of English, and no money. All he had
was a suitcase filled with his personal
belongings and the driving ambition
to succeed in his new homeland.
At 54, when many men his age are
beginning to dream about retirement,
Rozenblat was faced with starting a
new career in a strange new world.

Now, only six years later, he was
having his picture taken with
Chrysler Corporation Vice Chairman
Robert Lutz at a gala luncheon at
Dearborn's Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Rozenblat, not Lutz, was one of the
guests of honor.
For Rozenblat, that moment last
month was the American Dream
come true. For the Jewish Vocational
Service, it was one of many success
stories.
JVS has changed in its 57 years
from the small job-placement source
serving refugees fleeing war-torn

Europe and then veterans of the war
itself.
The organization has widened its
scope to impact not just the Jewish
community, but the greater commu-
nity as well. In doing so, it has
become recognized as a key player in
the metropolitan Detroit business
world.
Exhibit one: here was Chrysler's
Lutz — one of the automotive indus-
try's hottest names and right on the
heels of the Daimler-Chrysler merger
— keynoting and serving as honorary
chair of JVS's "Strictly Business"

awards luncheon.
But the biggest change in direction
made by JVS wasn't just expanding
its client base to the general public.
Indeed, the edge that sets JVS apart
is making the business world its part-
ner.
Karol Friedman, JVS director of
Career Employment and Employ- 44
ment Services, said, "Both the indi-
vidual and the employer are our
clients." JVS Executive Director Bar-
bara R. Nurenberg calls them "two
sets of customers."
