developed through strong and often
very different backgrounds.
Truan has extensive experience with
jazz, pop, classical and traditional
music and sets the tone for the group's
sound. He has toured throughout
Europe and appeared on several
recordings as a pianist with modern
jazz groups. He also composed for a
number of film soundtracks.
Clarinetist and saxophonist Michael
Heitzler studied at the Music
Academy in Freiburg, Germany, and
performed with the Radio Orchestra
of Baden-Baden. He toured with the
European Symphony Orchestra under
the direction of Antal Dorati, who has
conducted the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra. He has led jazz and funk
bands and performed with the
Klezmatics.
Flutist Niki Reiser also graduated
from Berklee, where he majored in
writing film scores. In addition to
establishing himself as a jazz artist, he
composed music for European films.
In 1997, his soundtrack for the film
jenseits der Stille (Beyond the Silence)
received Germany's Federal Film Prize
(Oscar) for Best Soundtrack and was
the first soundtrack in six years to win
the Bavarian Film Prize.
• Bassist Daniel Fricker studied at the
Swiss Jazz School in Bern and at the
Conservatory of Music in Basel. He
has recorded with the Sinfonietta
Basel and the Serenata Basel and
toured and recorded with Lionel
Hampton, Tony Scott and Adam
Nussbaum.
Saxophonist and drummer David
Klein was raised in a musical house-
hold by singer Miriam Klein and
trumpeter Oscar Klein, both well-
known European jazz artists. He
became drummer in his mother's
quintet when he was 16 and later
studied at Berklee.
For the Ann Arbor performance,
Heitzler will be replaced by Claudio
Puntin. Although Heitzler joined Kol
Simcha as the only non-Jew, he mar-
ried a Jewish woman, converted and
became observant, refusing to perform
on Shabbat.
The other members, all in their
30s, are single. They see each other
every day as friends and never
rehearse.
"We play so much we don't have to
rehearse," Truan said. "We also run
our group like a democracy. All new
compositions must be voted on before
we perform them."
