This years Walk for Israel took a different route. ver 3,000 people put their best foot forward Sunday in the 20th annual Walk for Israel. In a departure from previous Walks, the event began at the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Community Center and wound 3 1/2 miles through Oak Park and Huntington Woods neighborhoods to the Detroit Zoo. Awaiting the multi- tudes at the zoo was music by the Israeli Parparim Ensemble, a biblical scavenger hunt, a mime, storytelling, Israeli food and art, and lots of other fun stuff. "It was a glorious day," said Bert Stein, a West Bloomfield resident who served as a Walk volunteer with his wife Marion. "Once we got to the zoo, everybody had a smile on their face." Stein liked the change of venue from West Bloomfield because it brought together the Orthodox and non- Orthodox communities in a much big- ger way than in previous years. The event was sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Michigan/Israel Connection. ❑ Left: Larry Kaplan of Farmington Hills wears his heart on his sleeve. 6/19 1998 22 Background A happy crowd on its way to the Detroit Zoo.
