Religion "has been an active and
continuing preoccupation. I wrote
that book because I felt I really want
to come to grips with the fundamental
narrative of Christianity, because I
don't really know it," he says.
The Jewish Mailer admits that
while he has gained some better
understanding of Christianity, "in a
way I have less respect for it now than
I had when I started." Christianity
itself is nothing more than a "fractured
vase," he claims.
"In other words, the average person
that goes to church and calls [himself]
a Christian is not living with the nar-
rative the way I would say God
intended [him] to live," he says.

According to the narrative, he
insists, "God wanted people to brood
on the notion that his son was sent
here to save us, to bring us something
that we had not yet possessed. Perhaps
it was love, perhaps it was mercy, per-
haps it was the idea that we couldn't
survive unless we cared for each other,
and I think this is the depth and the
moral root of Christianity."
Most religions are opposed to that
concept, instead believing that
humankind should try to rise to God
and be accepted in heaven, Mailer
adds.
"On one hand, [Christianity] pre-
tends to be a religion of love, and
actually it's a religion of assent," he
says.
As the world enters the next centu-
ry, Mailer believes that religion may
actually be the thing that "holds back
everything. People are getting more
and more icy cold toward the very
notion of religion," he charges.
"What we don't have now is a plau-
sible God. We cannot have a good
society without some sense that we
come from a creator, who not only
created us but also needs us.
"God helps us. God hurts us. We
help God. We hurt God. There is an
active dialectic between God and
us." ❑
