looked at life in and around Atlanta
from the view of Vietnamese and
Mexican immigrants. It inspired a
song by the Indigo Girls, "Shame on
You"; the video for that song features
clips from Zeiger's film.
"I really did this project primarily to
try to get to know my son, and in a
weird kind of way, making this film was
the best way to do that. I don't think I
would have gotten to know him in the
same way if I hadn't," he says.

It took making a movie about his
son's high school marching band for
David Zeiger to really know his son,
Danny. And through the making of
"The Band" — a P.O.V. public televi-
sion film that airs nationally at 10
p.m. Tuesday, June 16, on PBS —
Zeiger learned to confront the demons
that had been lurking since the death
of his other son, Michael, at age 9.
"It was an interesting ride," says
Zeiger, who is Jewish and has lived in
Atlanta "on and off" since the mid-
1970s. The documentary maker lived
in Detroit from 1984-87.
"The Band" is Zeiger's second fea-
ture-length documentary. His first
