THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE

Beth Yehudah is, in some ways, the
victim of its own success. Enrollment,
at 755 students, is 28 percent higher
than in 1992, when it had 590 stu-
dents. And continued growth is
expected. According to Goldenberg,
40-50 new students enroll each year.
He anticipates enrollment will hit
1,000 within the next five years.

For tutoring, Rabbi Eric Greenbaum
utilizes a vacant office left by a staffer
on lunch break.

"It's a nice thing to have happen to
you when your school is growing, but
it's a challenge," said Mayerfeld, who
noted that many Beth Yehudah par-
ents — in a community where average
family size is 6-7 children — only
have their oldest child enrolled so far.
Discussions with Temple Emanu-El
over the possibility of buying some of
its property were amiable and lasted
about a year, with United Jewish
Foundation President Robert Slatkin
and Federation President Robert
Naftaly helping to facilitate, said
Torgow. However, discussions over the
piece of land that's currently used as
an overflow parking lot and regularly
leased to the Mel Farr Ford dealership,
ended three months ago with no sale.
Money was not the issue, said Beth
Yehudah and Temple Emanu-El offi-
cials. "They gave us some preliminary
ideas of what they thought the land
values were, and we thought their
assessments were fair," said Torgow.
Neither Torgow nor John Jacobs,
Temple Emanu-El's immediate past
president, would disclose the value of
the land, explaining that price was
never formally negotiated. Temple
Emanu-El decided before discussions
reached that stage that it preferred to
hold onto the land under discussion.
"We're committed to staying at our
current location and we like our prop-
erty the way it is. We like the view
and the aesthetics," said Jacobs. ❑
