where the unaffiliated and marginal-
ly affiliated congregate — places like
Barnes & Noble Booksellers —
through an educational exchange.
A board member, Moskowitz chal-
lenges AJE to become a pioneering
think-tank for family education:
"Families need to learn together.
Intergenerational learning is critical
to Jewish continuity"
A Jewish Education For Families
(JEFF) advisory board member, Yed-
wab lobbies for larger community
allocations to day schools, synagogue
schools and camp programs to link
kids to their Jewishness while they're
still highly impressionable.
Rabbi Aaron Bergman of Congre-
gation Beth Abraham Hillel Moses,
another JEFF advisory board member,
favors AJE "bringing direct program-
ming to congregations our size, con-
gregations that otherwise couldn't
afford to bring in lots of teachers to
train."
Extensions of JEFF, an AJE flag-
ship, include the Institute for Single
Jewish Parents, Interfaith Connection,
Russian acculturation, and congrega-
tional and community programs.
The Midrasha Center for Adult
Jewish Learning is another AJE flag-
ship.
The Ben Teitel Israel Incentive
Savings Plan, meanwhile, encour-
ages fifth through seventh graders to
continue Jewish studies en route to
an organized Israel trip as a teenager.

encourages teenagers to volunteer on
behalf of the less fortunate.
AJE's Opening the Doors special
education program serves 17 partner
schools. Its growth, says Giles, "has
continued to fortify an awareness of
those with special needs in our com-
munity."
AJE also extends enrichment and
resources to hundreds of teachers.
Giles is excited about a $50-mi1-
lion Millennium Campaign that
Federation plans in tandem with the
United Jewish Foundation of Metro-
politan Detroit. Part of the blueprint

calls for a $25-million endowment,
overseen by Federation, to fund a
range of Jewish life experiences,
including education.
Mayerfeld hopes AJE "will contin-
ue to provide the services that have
been successful and that, more
importantly, they help lead the com-
munity to a deeper appreciation of
the importance of formal Jewish
education in all its forms."
Moskowitz urges AJE to reach for
the stars. The same, he said, doesn't
always mean the best. He added,
"Here's a chance to say, 'Here's what's
good and should be kept and here's
what's weak and should be changed.'
"We can't, as a community, be
frightened by change. We must move
forward, to do what's best for kids and
adults in terms of Jewish learning.
"We have to break the mold."
Indeed, we do.
But we need the Agency for Jew-
ish Education to show the way and,
in the process, become something
even more relevant, more vital.
Giles welcomes the challenge: "If
the community values greater depth in
programming, there's no reason our
agency can't fulfill that. Whatever hap-
pens to AJE in light of the JESNA
report, it will be for the better. We'll
definitely emerge stronger." 0

LETTERS

Sweeping
them under

not make
them disap-
pear. And, of
course, the
personal
attacks in Mr.
Herschel
Schlussel's
Ze'ev Chafets
letter on
Ze'ev Chafets
and Leah Rabin are in the name of
Jewish unity.
When I served in the IDF
infantry reserves, my commanding
officer was an Israeli army captain by
the name of Emil Grunzweig. I
served under him through six
months of reserve duty in and fol-
lowing the Yom Kippur War and

during the Lebanon War.
He was murdered during a Peace
Now demonstration in Jerusalem by
a young Orthodox man who had
never served in the army. That young
man declared Grunzweig to be a
rodef an enemy of the Jewish people
whom it is a mitzvah to kill. That
was the same term that Yigal Amir's
rabbi used for Yitzhak Rabin, thus
justifying his assassination.

Caffeine Count
Is Much Lower

As a green tea enthusiast, I was pleased
to see a discussion of this beverage ("A
Night to Remember," Jewish News
May 22). However, the description of

100 mg. of caffeine per eight-ounce
cup seemed rather high.
I checked a few Web sites and it
appears that the caffeine figure is usu-
ally much lower.
Salada has an excellent Web site for
tea (www.greentea.com ), and accord-
ing to its figures, six ounces of green
tea has 30 mg. of caffeine (therefore,
eight ounces would have 40 mg.).
Another good Web site, www.ippodo-
tea.co.jp/home_e.html, provides much
additional information.
My brief research on this subject
indicates that growing conditions,
brewing time and the variety of tea
determine the amount of caffeine in a
cup of green tea. If one wants a strong
jolt of caffeine, this is probably not
the best beverage to drink.
