I

t happens more often than you'd
think. Overwhelmed by the sur-
roundings or perhaps by the
crowds, a student on a field trip
to the Holocaust Memorial Center
passes out.
Last Friday morning, the West
Bloomfield Fire Department revived a
student who fainted midway through
the exhibit. The boy was part of a tour

group from Waldon Middle School in
Orion Township. He was treated at
the scene.
Two large groups were in the build-
ing at the time of the incident.
"It's happened twice in a short peri-
od of time," said West Bloomfield Fire
Chief Carl Borg, "but we don't really
keep score."
Selma Silverman, HMC adminis-
trator, said the reasons for the episodes
range from the heat and crowds to the
identification of visitors with the sub-
ject matter.
"Usually it happens to a girl, size
two and overdressed," she said. "We
don't have a coatroom. It gets warm
and stuffy and it's emotionally difficult
for kids to deal with ... It's a recipe for
a lot of different things."
Silverman said there have been
periods when someone faints once a
week, but there have been no serious
injuries. A few times, an ambulance
was called because a person had hit his
head on something, she said.
The HMC wants emergency med-
ical technicians to speak to docents
before the next school year on the
treatment of people overcome by the
exhibits, she said. 1_
