nized a peer counselor training pro-
gram modeled on Reach for Hope.
Today, 25 students are peer coun-
selors. The district is hoping to hire a
staff person to help coordinate and
expand suicide prevention services.
"The program increases community
awareness and gives people permission
to talk about suicide and their feel-
ings," said Williams. "It also gives
accountability to student peers and
lets them know that if someone's talk-
ing about harming themselves, you
need to take it seriously and contact
an adult who can get help."
Seglin noted that many of the
teens who participated in training
once had been suicidal themselves and
that by helping others, they found
greater purpose in their own lives.
"Through the program, they found a
place to belong and they're making
themselves responsible for each
other," she said.
Beth El has received requests from
school districts throughout the coun-
try for assistance in developing suicide
prevention programs, said Seglin.

the Birmingham school district also.
Although Seglin will give up the
program's staffing responsibilities
when she leaves Beth El at the end of
June, she plans to remain actively
involved as a volunteer. "This took
off much quicker than I dreamed it
would," said Seglin, who is seeking
funding to extend the program's
reach, perhaps even establishing a
national network of teen suicide pre-
vention programs. "It's probably one
of the most rewarding things I've
