Here's To...

Matthew Weiner, a senior at Berkley
High School, has received a Faculty
Award scholarship to attend the
Columbus College of Art and
Design. The merit scholarship was
awarded as a result of an art portfolio
competition held at the college which
was judged by a team of CCAD fac-
ulty members.

Hannah Fishman of West Bloomfield
is a Bloomfield Hills Andover gradu-
ating senior who had a drawing dis-
played at the
Birmingham
Bloomfield Art
Association as
part of her high
school art con-
test. Hannah was
awarded a merit
based scholarship
to study at the
School of the Art Hannah Fishman
Institute of
Chicago for two weeks during the
summer of 1997. In March of this
year, her display in the Traub Art
Scholarship contest won her first
place and a trip to Europe during the
summer of 1998. In April of 1998
Hannah and her father were flown to
Minneapolis/St. Paul where she
accepted an award for her digital
image in a national competition
sponsored by Imation Corporation.
As one of twenty-five finalists from a
field of more than 1,200 contestants,
Hannah received a scholarship for
$1,000 in addition to the free trip.
She will attend the Center for Cre-
ative Studies in Detroit next year
where she will major in computer
graphics and animation. Based on her
portfolio, she was awarded a merit
scholarship for $16,000.

Karen Stewart Amber is the new
director for Jewish Home and Aging
Services. She is a member of the
National Association of Social Work
as well as a mem-
ber of the Ameri-
can Society on
Aging. For the
last nine years,
she has worked as
a social worker at
the Jewish Feder-
ation Apartments,
Teitel Building.

is scheduled to participate in the
1998 National Youth Leadership

Forum on Medicine in San Francisco. 1.1
Jared, in the class of 1999 at Roeper
,School, will be among 350 high
school juniors and seniors from
across America who have attained the
qualifications required to participate
in the forum.

Fran Victor and Bill Harder of Vic-
tor/Harder Productions Inc. of West
Bloomfield produced a documentary
"Need Knows No Season" which won
a bronze medal award at the 31st
annual WorldFest Houston Interna-
tional Film Festival.

Birmingham Groves High School
won the national debate champi-
onship of the National Catholic
Forensic League over Memorial Day
weekend in Detroit. Many public
00
schools participate in the league. Jew-
ish participants on the Groves team
were Rick Mathews, Freddie Blavin
and coach John Lawson. The team of
Mathews and Kevin Clune were 4-1
in the preliminary rounds and then
won five additional rounds to defeat
142 teams from throughout the
country. Blavin and Mal Hulbanni
were 5-0 in the preliminaries, but lost 41
in the octafinals.

Glenn Adelson has been teaching at
Harvard University in two different
departments for the past 13 years. He
teaches expository writing and con-
servation biology/botany. He has
received several awards through the
years as best teacher. Recently, he was
elected by Phi Beta Kappa from Rad-
cliffe and Harvard as best teacher.

CHaZaKaH
Hears Musician

Michael Krieger will be featured at
the June meeting of CHaZaKaH, the
Adat Shalom Synagogue seniors
group 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25,
at the synagogue.
Krieger is a musician whose per-
formances feature his own composi-
tions along with jazz standards, show
tunes and popular songs. He plays
both piano and guitar accompani-
ment.
The CHaZaKaH program is open
to all community seniors. There is a
$5 charge for members and a $6 non-
