designed to meet the needs of the
local community." It offers programs
for children recovering from abuse,
support for those afflicted with
HIV/AIDS and other community ser-
vices. The Guthrie Foundation is a
not-for-profit organization which pro-
vides a place for those concerned with
issues of the environment, education,
health, etc.
"My parents were both people who
believed in serving humanity," said
Arlo. "You've got to do something; my
dad did, my mom did. We just grew
up that way. My kids are being
brought up that way. You have to give
back, especially when so many won-
derful things happen to you."
These days, Guthrie is on the road
ten months out of the year. The rest of
the time he tries to stay home with his
children and grandchildren.
Son Abe, who co-produced Mystic
Journey, Guthrie's most recent album,
is 28, and daughter Annie, 22, runs
Guthrie's Rising Son Records label
and handles her father's bookings.
Daughters Cathy, 26, and Sarah, 20,
live in California.
All three of Guthrie's grandchildren
(two are Abe's, the other is Annie's)
live in a sort of Guthrie compound
with their parents and grandfather.
"They're not in the same house, but
on the same farm. So it is sort of like
Walton's Mountain up there — a
multigenerational living thing, and it
is terrific," said Guthrie.
What can the audience at Magic
Bag expect from Guthrie?
"There's nothing written in stone
with any shows that we do," said the
performer.
"But it was 30 years ago last
November that my first record, Alice's
Restaurant,' came out. And because
next year is the 30th anniversary of
the movie by the same name, for the
next few years I know I'm going to
have to do [it] every night.
"So we're going to do Alice's
Restaurant' in its entirety — which we
don't do all the time. And we'll do
some things from the newest, latest,
greatest records, and maybe some of
the other old songs. We'll fit in as
much as we can given the time we've
got," he promised. ❑
