os,

press a switch, he starts to bark out
questions in German, just as the
Nazis did during these selections.
We even were able to crawl
through a replica of an under-
ground hiding place to a 9 x 11
foot chamber where 13 Jews lived
for nine months.
It was in a hiding place exactly like
this that survivor Jay Ipson, now a
Richmond resident, hid with his fam-
ily near Kovno in Lithuania.
In the Kristallnacht Room, named
for the night that Nazis all over Ger-
many shattered glass and destroyed
synagogues and Jewish businesses, the
exhibits include a stack of books with
simulated flames, to show the Nazis'
book-burning events.
One of the most unusual exhibits
is that of the hiding place itself.
When visitors crawl through it, they
know they are re-living the experience
that Jay Ipson actually went through.
No wonder many visitors are over-
whelmed. Over 9,000 visitors have
come to this new museum since it
opened. ❑
