Danny, right, with bandmate Anisha
Stackhouse.
"It kind of justifies trying to probe
things that as a parent you just don't
probe. It's very interesting how all
teenagers have lives that they don't
want their parents to know about. It
doesn't mean they're doing anything
wrong. [They are] just in their own
world. That's where I wanted to be, in
Danny's world."
Zeiger spent a year documenting
Danny's high school marching band in
Decatur, Ga. The film features candid
student commentary on everything
from anorexia to Ritalin to divorce
and race relations.
In the film, Danny's girlfriend,
Mary Ellen Wiggins, speaks openly
about her battle with anorexia. A
classmate of Danny's, Burt, tells of his
wild run-ins with the law. Other
friends, Kate and Cameron, discuss
Attention Deficit Disorder and the
prescription drug culture. The film

"I went to a football game at
Decatur High, where Danny was a
sophomore," says Zeiger, recalling his
decision to begin filming "The
Band."
"I looked over and was shocked to
see Danny dancing, something I'd
never seen him do before. Suddenly
there was this brand-new person there,
this teenager living in his own world.
It hit me immediately that I wanted to
make a film about him."
Danny, then 7 , withdrew after
Michael's death. "For Danny and me,
the effect of Michael's death has
always been with us in our own differ-
ent ways," says Zeiger. "In a sense, I
was trying to find Michael, to figure
out what his life would be like if he
hadn't died.
"You never get over the death of a
child. But in making this film, I was
saying good-bye to Danny the little
boy. Accepting his growing up helped
me to accept and live with Michael's
death."
Zeiger notes that a parent never
puts closure on a child's death, only
learns to live with it. In making this
