n part because of his
refreshing directness,
Rabin's fellow ambas-
sadors to the United
States, who would not themselves
dare to deviate similarly from the
diplomatic norm, voted him best
ambassador in Washington. And six
former secretaries of state — Henry
Kissinger, James A. Baker, Lawrence
Eagleburger, Alexander Haig,
William Rogers, and Cyrus Vance
— described him to me as one of
the greatest national leaders they
had ever dealt with. ...
"Still, a few other American lead-

other tides, Kurzman began this book
within days after the Rabin assassina-
tion in 1995, at the suggestion of his
publisher.
Among the more than 200 people
he interviewed are politicians, military
figures, old friends, American officials,
professors and several whose names
were kept out of the news, such as
Yosi Ginosar, "Rabin's secret link to
the PLO."

A realist and a
pragmatist.

Kurzman reports that during the
1980s, Ginosar, an Arabic-speaking
former Shin Bet official, represented
Rabin in "direct and ultra-secret con-
tacts" to the Palestinian Liberation
Organization, although such meetings
were then illegal. Ginosar told the
author that Rabin was thinking of
making a deal with the PLO as early
as 1988.
He also interviewed Giora Eini, a
trade union lawyer who served as an
ongoing behind-the-scenes mediator
between Rabin and Shimon Peres. "If
it hadn't been for him," the author
says, "I don't know if the government
would have survived." Trusted by both
men, Eini visited with Rabin in his Tel
Aviv apartment on the morning of the
assassination.
Kurzman credits Rabin with deep-
ening Israel's relationship with the
United. States in his years as arnbas-
sa.der, 1968 to 1973, shifting the U.S.
from a friendly nation to a security
partner.

ers were less impressed with him. At
a White House dinner meeting with
President Jimmy Carter, Rabin did
not hide his feelings when Carter
made a proposal he strongly took
issue with. After dinner, when the
President asked his guest whether he
would like to hear his daughter,
Amy, play the piano, the reply was
succinct:
"No!"
In another, perhaps unintention-
al, affront to the president, Rabin
ground a cigarette stub into the car-
pet.

While in Washington, Rabin
cemented individual relationships as
well as arms deals. Kurzman also
chronicles Rabin's long friendship with
King Hussein, beginning in the early
1970s.
Rabin is portrayed as a realist and
pragmatist, a man who had difficulties
making decisions but once made, had
utter determination to achieve his
goals. His wartime experiences affect-
ed him deeply; he felt personally
responsible for Israel's soldiers. "He
spoke from his heart. No other politi-
cian engendered such a feeling of
trust. He was compulsively honest,"
Kurzman says.
Kurzman last saw Rabin during the
1992 campaign. At the end of their
interview, Rabin told him, "You can
write that if we win, I'll make peace
within nine months of taking office."
Included are 16 pages of pho-
tographs; the cover photo is Rabin at
age 18, in his last year at Kadouri
Agricultural School before joining the
Palmach.
