Paper by "illegally smuggling more
than 85,000 Holocaust survivors in
some 70 ships and thousands of Jews
from Syria and Lebanon over land to
Palestine.
Of the 7,000 Palmach fighters
who fought in the war after the dec-14
laration of the Jewish state in May
1948, 1,000 lost their lives.
Despite a direct order from
Palmach commander Yigal Allon that
all photos of Palmach training or per-
sonnel be destroyed for fear they
might fall into the hands of the
British during Black Sabbath (an
operation aimed at destroying the mi
Palmach leadership), many disobeyed'
and hid their photos.
In 1987, Dita Perach, once a
fighter pilot in the Palmach air
force, began to gather these photos
in an ongoing program to document

"Most of our conventions are more
private, but this one even features a
free concert in Central Park," Najman
said. "There also will be a dedication
of a new wing of the Holocaust
Memorial Center in honor of 1,000
cantors who perished during the
Holocaust."
With concerts before Orthodox,
Reform and Conservative congrega-
tions, the cantors hope to send a mes-
sage of community, companionship
and unity, according to Najman, who
reports that there also will be closed
sessions for workshops, master classes
and lectures.

The Palmach — the striking force
of the Haganah (the military arm of
the Jewish settlements in Palestine)
was established in 1941 and incorpo-
rated seven years later into the Israel
Defense Forces (IDF). Among its
members was Yitzhak Rabin (see this
week's "On The Bookshelf").
Its members, all volunteers, were
trained to report for active duty on
24 hours' notice and to serve in any
capacity wherever arid whenever
required.

Today the Palmach Archives is a
visual treasure of 25,000 pho-
tographs of the young men and
women who dared to dream of the
creation of a Jewish state. The
archives are housed at Kibbutz Beit
HaShitah in Israel.
In celebration of the 50th anniver-
sary of the founding of the State of
Israel, New York's Hebrew-Union
College-Jewish Institute of Religion is
displaying photographs from the
Palmach Archives in anexhibit titled
"The Palmach Archives: Photographs
of Israel's War of Independence." The
exhibit runs through June 30.
