CANTORIAL CONCERTS

When the 450-member Cantors
Assembly celebrates its 50th anniver-
sary with a series of programs in New
York June 7-11, three area cantors
will have prominent roles.
Cantor Chaim Najman of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek will
appear in the first Carnegie Hall con-
cert devoted to cantorial chants. Adat
Shalom Cantor Howard Glantz will
perform in a program on Ellis Island,
and Cantor Emeritus Larry Vieder
will take part in a Shacharit (morning
/- davening) service.
"I grew up in New York, where
every person with musical aspirations
aspires to Carnegie Hall, so this is a
very exciting event," Najman said.
Najman will be one of 22 cantors
presenting a wide repertoire of chaz-
zanic masterpieces that have been
part of 2,300 years of synagogue wor-
\, ship. They will be accompanied by a
choir and orchestra.
The Shaarey Zedek cantor will
chant Psalm 24, "A Psalm of David,"
which is known as the "Lift Up Your
Heads Psalm."
Cantor Glantz is singing a Spanish
Civil War song — "Viva La Quince
Brigada" ("Long Live the Fifth
Brigade"). It captures the spirit of
resistance against the fascists and
communicates, with the perfor-
mance's other selections, that the
United States attracted Jews — and
other oppressed immigrants — of all
nations.
The Carnegie Hall concert high-
lights this year's festival of songs cele-
brating the multifaceted role each
cantor must play as poet, scholar,
teacher, singer, composer, guardian of
the liturgical tradition and prayer
emissary on behalf of the Jewish peo-
ple.
The Conservative Cantors
Assembly was founded in 1947 to
preserve the tradition of Jewish litur-
gical music nearly destroyed by Nazis
