Donald Friedlich creates sculptural
miniatures in the form of jewelry.
Brooches dominate his attention as he
covers colored metal with clear glass.
Ideas for his next pieces come as he
puts current forms together.
"Work yields more work, and ideas
yield more ideas," said Friedlich,
whose recent projects are about to
become the focal point of a solo show
at the Sybaris Gallery in Royal Oak.
"I like to set the form
and color palette separately,"
Friedlich explained about'
the way he forges different
materials into one object.
"A lot of my ideas come
in relief, and with the
brooch, I can work in
relief. Brooches give the
most artistic freedom in
jewelry"

His jewelry also has been
included in survey shows, such
as the Centennial Metals
Exhibition at the Society of Arts
and Crafts in Boston and the
American Revelations Show,
which toured the United States
and Great Britain.
Friedlich is president-elect of
the 3,000-member Society of
North American Goldsmiths.
His term begins in 1999.
"I relate well to scale, and I
relate more to a more intimate
scale," Friedlich said.

Friedlich, who earned his bachelor
of fine arts degree from the Rhode
Island School of Design, has shown
his work in museums and galleries

Arts Decoratifs in Paris, the
American Craft Museum in New
York City and the Oakland Museum

Friedlich, who also designs neck-
laces made from slate beads, likes to
combine precious and nonprecious
materials, geometric and organic
forms and rough and smooth surfaces.
His jewelry reflects the Japanese aes-
thetic of accepting and enhancing
nature rather than any Judaic influ-
ences, says the Jewish artist.
