Shavuot 5758 or Sunday, May 30,
was a special celebration at Congre-
gation Beth Shalom, when 13 syna-
gogue members observed their b'nai
mitzvah during services. The 12
women and one man have studied
with Rabbi David Nelson and Can-
tor Samuel Greenbaum since Sep-
tember 1997 to prepare.
"There has been a real bonding
process within the group," said bat
mitzvah candidate Debbie Cohn.
"We are all very supportive of each
other as we're learning our prayers
and haftorah portions." Lillian Gold
added, "For several of us, bat mitz-
vah was not an option when we
were children. This is something
we've waited a long time for, and I
think that makes it even more
meaningful.
"This class has been both a chal-
lenge and a joy," Rabbi Nelson said.
"As adults, they know more and
question more than youngsters tend
to. That can make for some very
lively classes."
"The commitment and effort on
the part of the members of this class
is very impressive," added Cantor
Greenbaum. "Some of them have
had to brush up on their Hebrew
and learn the melodies and memo-
rize their parts, and it's a thrill to see
them increase their already consider-
able skills and knowledge."
