LETTERS GROUP from page 33 looking forward to another centennial celebration in Detroit next year when the United Jewish Foundation marks the achievement of 100 years of service. Stuart J. Snider, president Ruth M. Marcus, Executive Director Hebrew Free Loan Association All Candidates Not Sounded In die May 29 edition ("The Educa- tion Race Is On"), you focus on school board races, including the one in West Bloomfield. It is certainly understandable that your publication would highlight Jewish candidates. However, you also have an r i impressive record for supporting non- Jewish candidates when they have shown extraordinary sensitivity to the rights and interests of the Jewish com- munity. Fran Denawetz, current board presi- dent at West Bloomfield, is an extraor- dinary person who has established a reputation throughout the community for being not only an advocate for the (-\/ rights of children in our schools, but for the rights of all persons irrespective of race, creed, national origin, color or gender. Inasmuch as your article not only profiled the challengers but also their positions on current issues in the schools, it is a little surprising that Mrs. Denawetz would not have been inter- viewed for her comments as president of the board that made the decisions now under attack. While it is certainly to be expected that The Jewish News will give exposure and opportunity to Jewish candidates where possible, I hope in this race Fran Denawetz will be seen for the outstand- ing person she is — not merely as a school board member, but also as a longtime supporter of the Jewish corn- munity in our township and the world. Jeffrey T. Stewart Trustee West Bloomfield Board of Education Phil Slomovitz: A Brave Pioneer Your remembrances of Phil Slomovitz ("The Slomovitz Years," The Jewish News May 1) were so very timely and appropriate. This history is unknown to most Jews in this area. Mr. Slo- movitz was a brave pioneer in many other cultural areas of Detroit in the early part of this century.
