GREAT NEWS FOR COUPLES
EXPERIENCING INFERTILITY!

their chosen fields. But, if you read
any of their writings or any of the
books about them, you see the dread-
ful cost that mental illness can take on
lives that, at times, are so far from bal-
anced.
Bear in mind, please, that mental
illness just doesn't appear. Mental ill-
ness is a genetic, inherited disorder. I
know this not only from the cold,
hard facts, but from the reality that
my husband and my son both take
lithium to help control their bi-polar
disorder.
Yes, my wonderful, bright, creative
husband also has mental illness. Now
we are looking at the possibility that
my beautiful 5-year-old son is also
affected. No, it doesn't just go from
father to son. My husband's mental ill-
ness is inherited from his mother's side
of the family. However, he has the
double whammy of having mental ill-
ness that also showed up from his
father's side.
So I have the right to worry about
my son's future life. I have lived for
the past five years with a husband who
has, for one reason or another, been
/- unable to hold a steady job. His disor-
der reached a point that he needed
intensive therapy, medication changes,
lots and lots of talking and even more
love and support.
While he is doing a million times
better, his confidence, or lack there of,
still stretch from day to day our ability
to cope. But our marriage has survived
\-• and has probably grown stronger over
the past five of our 17 years together.
Please don't pity me. That was not
the purpose of this piece. Some days, I
do wonder at my capacity to survive.
Locking the bedroom door and having
a good cry are not the worst things in
the world.
But I look at where I have been
(having turned to welfare and the gen-
erosity of relatives) and I look at
where I'm going (hopefully, if the
financing comes through, to graduate
school in the fall for my teaching cer-
tificate and a master's degree in educa-
tion).
And I wonder if I would have
been a different person without these
heartaches and without the pain I
have been through. I find the answer
in the bright eyes of my children,
in their laughter and in their discov-
ery. The answer is that I will never
know.
This is the life I have, but it's not
the one I would have chosen. I guess
that making the best of it will be my
answer. CI

The Center for Reproductive Medicine has Opened
a Comprehensive New Center in Oakland County!

ONE OF THE HIGHEST SUCCESS RATES IN MICHIGAN
AND AMONG THE LEADING CLINICS IN THE U.S.A.

Mostafa I. Abuzeid, M.D. of The Center for Reproductive Medicine at Hurley
Medical Center in Flint has opened a second location. The beautiful new 7,000
sq. ft. comprehensive facility and surgery center is in Rochester Hills/Troy.
Conveniently located near M-59, the center includes state-of-the-art embryol-
ogy laboratories and operating rooms. The new center provides all diagnostic
procedures and treatments for infertility in both male and female. In vitro fer-
tilization, G114 1, Z114 1, ICSI, and assisted hatching pro-
cedures are being performed in the new facility.

Recently published statistics by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Ser-
vices' Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have proven that the
Center has one of the highest success rates in Michigan and is among the leading
clinics in the U.S.A: The Center was among one of the first to introduce the
ICSI procedure for treatment of male infertility, and leads th Midwest in male in-
fertility success. Internet users can access information from the Center for Dis-
ease Control on these statistics by visiting their web site at www.cdc.gov. or by
Mostafa I. Abuzeid, M.D.
viewing Resolve's web site at www.resolve.org .
F. R.C.O.G. (U.K),
The success rate of the center is not only a result of knowledge and expertise,
but also the friendly, caring staff that has a deep understanding of the patient's desire to conceive.

• Free monthly lectures open to the public • Male & Female Infertility

*As entry criteria are highly variable for each program, a center-by-center comparison of results is not vaid.
