The Daimler-Benz representative in
Tel Aviv is Benjamin Navon, the for-
mer Israeli ambassador to the Federal
Republic of Germany. Navon also
oversees substantial investments in
Israel's economy being made by
Daimler-Benz.
According to figures supplied by
Rachel Hirschler, assistant economics
minister at Israel's embassy in
Washington, Israel's 1996 exports to
Germany were more than $1 billion
annually. The same year, Israel import-
ed more than $2.8 billion in German
goods, the majority of it in the fields
of transportation and machinery, and
a good share of it from Daimler-Benz,
Germany's biggest industrial conglom-
erate.

owned a vintage Mercedes-Benz whose
previous owner was German industri-
alist Alfred Felix Krupp, the muni-
tions baron who was an early financial
backer of Hitler. "People asked me
how I could own such a car," recalled
Glieberman, "and I always asked them
what did the car ever do?"
Now Glieberman asks, "How in
the world can we hold the current
generation (of Germans) responsible
for what went on? If we continue to
promote that, we will continue to
promote prejudice with each other. It
will be like the Arabs and the
Israelis.
"Eventually, we won't even be able
to answer who started this feud.
"The people building the cars were
not even born during the Nazi era.
How can we hold them accountable
and responsible? By doing so, we are
just forcing people not to live togeth-
er. As a society, we can not afford to
be small-minded," said Glieberman,
adding, "We need to take the high
road."
