GENERAL MOTORS
LOYALTY FIRST REWARD

it

My wife Florence and I attended
Detroit's Sunday Israel independence
celebration in May 1948. It was the
most exciting event ever in Detroit.
Jews had beat their breasts for millen-
nia. We were alive and actually experi-
encing the realization of this dream.
Today, we are celebrating 50 years
of independence. There's a lot of work
ahead but I do believe that peace has
to come. There is no viable alternative.
Thanks again for your invaluable
insight. We need to look back. You've
performed a great service to our entire
community. Our young people need
to know that 1) nothing happens by
itself, 2) dedicated people spent their
lives achieving the results we take for
granted, 3) every generation has to be
part of the struggle for freedom and 4)
nothing happens by itself.

It is interesting how James Besser, in
his usual manner, takes a stunning
Netanyahu and Israeli public relations
victory in the Congress and, with the
American Jewish Committee, the
Zionist Organization of America and
AIPAC, and turns it into a dirge
("Bibi Trumps Washington," The Jew-
ish News May 22).
He does so by using quotes of neg-
ativism from long-time Peace Now
zealot Robert 0. Freedman and a
Labor Party Knesset member whose
party was voted out of power by the
Israelis two years ago.
This issue revolves around pressing
Israel into continuing to make unilater-
al concessions to a sworn enemy dedi-
cated to her destruction. The JAC, the
ZOA and AIPAC have decided that this
is not such a good idea. Not so, says
James Besser, Peace Now and a few in
the defeated Labor Party.
A page later, in our Jewish News, we
are treated by columnist Eric Silver to
the dire warnings of Israel's "great
friend," Hannan Ashrawi. This stal-
wart Arab propagandist is very unhap-
py with the current turns of events
wherein an Israeli prime minister is
actually standing up for the vital needs
of his own country. How encouraging
to those of us that worry about Israel
to learn, via the warnings of Eric Sil-
ver, another anti-Netanyahu devotee,
that Hannan Ashrawi is unhappy.
