Academy ritual takes place at 12:05
p.m. when the brigade of midship-
men gather for meal formations in
this court.
On our tour we also passed
Michelson Hall, which is named in
honor of Albert Abraham Michelson,
class of 1870 and a famous Jewish
:alumni. In 1907, he became the first
American scientist to win a Nobel
Prize.
Today, as in the past, Jewish mid-
shipmen are a tiny minority of the
total student body — 60 students out
of 4,000. But despite the small num-
bers, the Academy does offer them a
range of Jewish activities. Finding out
more about Jewish life here was one
/-- of the most interesting highlights of
our visit.
"People are happy to hear that
there's an ongoing functioning pro-
gram for Jewish midshipmen at the
Yard," said Rabbi Jonathan A.
Panitz, who serves as Chaplain and is
also a Commander.
Besides Shabbat services, there are
\ _services and observations for all Jew-
/ ish holidays. A sukkah is built out-
doors for Succot; and on Passover, the
annual seder in Alumni Hall has
become a big event, last year attended
by 175 midshipmen, both Jewish and
non-Jewish.
There are also varied activities for
the Jewish students. Many participate
in volunteer projects that include
---teaching in area Hebrew schools or
• doing work at the U.S. Holocaust
Museum. Panitz leads an annual trip
to Israel during spring break for mid-
shipmen of all faiths.
Then, too, there are Hebrew class-
es conducted by Rabbi Panitz twice a
week, and also a Jewish Midshipmen
Club which meets with him every
Wednesday evening for discussion
\
rand for pizza.
The rabbi is also a member of the
Rabbinic Assembly, the Conservative
association of rabbis, and a former
pulpit rabbi who has served congrega-
tions in London and New England.
But ever since October of '95, he's
been at the U.S. Naval Academy, as
one of four chaplains.
"It's extremely important to have a
• Jewish presence at the Naval Acade-
my," he said, noting that for quite a
long time, there was virtually none.
"But the Navy is coming out of its
former WASP-oriented environment
to recognize that it must accommo-
date all faith groups. Now there's a
very active Jewish presence and it's
growing even stronger." ❑

Look what we've
done to Matzos!
