on piano and vocals in the back room
at the Caucus Club ... He was there
with his trio the last two weeks of
Barbra Streisand's engagement ... prior
to her going off Broadway as an
understudy in the show I Can Get It
For You Wholesale.
WHEN HE HUNG up his salami
and retired, Harry Weiss' Original
Delicatessen in Harvard Row, 11 Mile
and Lahser, became the new stomping
grounds of owners Irene and Erno
Klein, who were the former bossfolks
of the little 26-seater Onion Deli on
Woodward in Royal Oak ... However,
he was more known for his bakeries
since coming here from Hungary ...
Vienna Bakery, Dexter and Lawrence;
National. Bakery, Dexter and Cort-
land; Vienna Bakery on Littlefield and
Seven Mile.
IN 1983, Lou Stern, president then
of the Harvey Goldman Co., and a
group of community minded Ortho-
dox men who wanted a high-quality
kosher restaurant, were behind the
new Center Cafe at the Jewish Com-
munity Center on Drake ... It was
under the Council of Orthodox Rab-
bis' supervision and had seating for
170 in a newly-designed room ...
Mohammed "Moe" Anseri, former La
Rotisserie head at Hyatt Regency-
Dearborn, was its general manager ...
Center Cafe, open to the public, was
where the men's health club restaurant
used to be ... Executive Chef Nick
Metrovich, who made the gourmet
dishes and soups, was at the Sheraton
Cadillac with Herman Schwartz, and
in the main kitchen at Hyatt Regency
... Elliot Schoenig, dining and catering
supervisor, originally from Detroit
before opening his own restaurant in
Chicago, did all the traditional Jewish
cooking ... Azim Boboff prepared the
homemade Jewish and Persian special-
ty dishes.
JAKK'S LOUNGE on Greenfield,
between Nine and 10, was one of the
area's more popular meeting places ...
Carl Steger at the piano bar had a
repartee that played on the egos of
customers walking in as he mentioned
their names ... The 165-foot parquet
dance floor, with the likes of Billy
Rose, always got a lot of action ...
Owners Dick and Aggie LaCombe,
who took over ownership from Jack
Freedman in 1980, toyed with the
thought of changing its name but
thought better about monkeying
around with success ... Those who fre-
quented the local spot will tell you
that if it could talk Jakk's would have
had a lot of stories to tell.
