SALLY AND Jimmy Katz could
look back to those pioneering days
when they opened their delicatessen
on Nine Mile in Oak Park ... Working
morning, noon and night was Jimmy's
way of life ... And when the two took
a vacation to Acapulco, customers
considered it a bigger thing than when
they finally decided to close one day a
week.
KORY'S on Greenfield and 10
Mile was a restaurant and old-fash-
ioned ice cream parlor owned by Ron
Licht, Harvey Kozin and Mickey
Weiner ... Its menu had a wide vari-
ety of food, with big feature being
the Coney Island hot dog ... It also
featured the only kosher candy man-
ufactured in Israel, box, wrapping
and all.
THE NOSH took over at the site
of the former Bagel Nosh on 10 Mile,
between Evergreen and Southfield,
and Peter Mittoff gave up his law
practice to manage the new deli ...
Peter's family used to own Petco Bar-
B-Q on W. McNichols and Palmer
Sandwich Shoppes ... Behind the
counter at the Nosh was Morrie
Leinoff, whose Leinoff & Lefkofsky
on Six Mile used to be a prime spot.
LARCO BROS. Italian Carry-Out
opened Jan. 13, 1983 in the Country
Village Shopping Center, 12 Mile and
Evergreen ... It was owned by Mark
and Mike Larco (Pete's sons) and
Ernest "Duke" Larco (Nick's son.)
The family was very much intact ...
with Frances Larco, Pete's wife, as
night cashier ... Susan Larco, Mark's
wife, day cashier ... and Nick Larco,
the sole living survivor of the three
original famous brothers, adviser for
his nephews and son.
The kitchen was large ... and the
waiting room had plenty of nostalgic
pictures on one wall for folks to see ...
of Pete, Mike and Nick.
DARLIN' LILLY'S Orchard Lake
Road, between 12 and 13 Mile, used
to have charbroiled veal, and its chef
had over 60 veal preparations he could
serve ... Bobby Laurel, at the piano
and vocalizing with his quartet, used
to call it the Apartment Lounge with
food.
