The Best Of Everything

The great food goes with Paint Creek's ambiance.

ith the warm weather,
folks feel like they are
dining outside at a
European bistro ... as
fishermen on the banks bait their lines
for trout or whatever fish that is
stocked there.
The patio of Paint Creek Cider
Mill & Restaurant seats 90 at the
multifaceted eating spot with its his-
toric background in Rochester.
This quaint, rustic restaurant,
located at 4480 Orion Road (halfway
between Lake Orion and Rochester),
is like a summer paradise that even
has a general store whose most popu-
lar items besides cider and donuts are
jams and jellies, with 50 to 100 jars
sold each day.
At peak times, about 1,500 dozen
donuts are made daily ... When the
cider machine is in full swing in the
fall, the mill uses more than 32,000
apples in a single day.
On top of all this, Paint Creek
Cider Mill & Restaurant has one of
Michigan's finest young executive
chefs ... Randy Emert, 1996 captain
of the Michigan Culinary Team that
won seven gold medals at the World
Culinary Salon (Culinary Olympics)
held every four years in Germany.
One of Randy's favorite big sellers
is the smoked whitefish on a maple
plank ... broiled and served with
smoked gruyere whipped potatoes ...
Also the pinenut crusted rainbow
trout fillets with dried cranberry
champagne sauce and jasmine rice.
You'll love Grandma Ruth's Meat
Pie, with the two loaves in a crispy
pastry crust... and the Cajun beef
short ribs with Jack Daniels barbecue
sauce and garlic smashed potatoes.
Randy also is big on items like
venison medallions infused with Rose-
mary and his popular apple-maple
glazed pheasant breast with garlic
smashed potatoes and smoked crimini
mushroom sauce.
In an average week, Paint Creek
restaurant serves more than 120
pounds of venison, 120 pounds of
pheasant and about 350 pounds of
whitefish.
It makes its own desserts ... apple
strudel, cheesecake, bread pudding,
etc. ... and bread sticks and sorbets.

Upon entering, guests are
greeted by a 300-gallon
aquarium stocked with
brown, rainbow and brook
trout, all of which are native
to Paint Creek ... In fact,
Paint Creek is the major
remaining trout stream in
the metro Detroit area ...
Behind the aquarium is a
comfortable lounge, in an
English pub style, complete
with a fireplace.
Before going into the din-
ing room, guests pass a series
of murals depicting nostalgic
scenes from Rochester's sto-
ried history, as well as images
of fly-fishing.
The dining room, with
windows on both sides,
gives an open, airy feeling
of being outdoors ... It
