Solti's teachers at the Liszt Academy
— Bela Bartok, Zoltan Kodaly and
Leo Weiner.
The CD includes Bartok's
Cantata Profana, Kodaly's Psalmus
Hungaricus and Weiner's Serenade for
Strings.
Solti was due to return for a con-
cert performance of these works in
March 1998. After his sudden death
in September, Ivan Fischer was chosen
to conduct what became a memorial
concert for Sold himself, marking the
return of the conductor's ashes to the
city of his birth to be interred close to
where his mentor Bartok's remains
now lie.

Summer travelers may head for
picture-perfect settings, but artists
are heading to scenic spots hoping
to turn those settings into perfect
pictures.
That's the goal of groups studying
with artist and teacher Karen
Halpern.
Before leading artists for three days
of work in Petoskey, Sept. 14-16,
Halpern is offering "Painting in the
Garden" and "Painting in the Great
Outdoors" for the Birmingham
Community House. Area gardens will
be visited every Monday in June.
Outdoor scenes near the Community
House will be visited on Mondays
throughout July and August.
"We want people to cast off the
confines of the studio, with its artifi-
cial light and contrived subject mat-
ter, to do what master artists have
done for centuries," Halpern said. "It
is an opportunity to paint en-plein-
air, on location, in a beautiful, natural
setting."
