Bruce® hardwood floors their fulfill- ment as Christians, but who need teach- ers and guides and sign- painters. And surely we all know that a "one- person The Rev. James Lyons show" is a cop-out whereby we let "him" do "our" work and we get off easy. And in that sense, Jim's death is as big a challenge as it is a loss. It is the opportunity for us — Jews and Chris- tians — to make the mission of the institute our mission, not just us sup- porting his mission. That's what was inescapably on our minds at the Dove Dinner, at this syn- agogue where Jews and Christians ate a kosher meal as they honored a min- ister, a priest and a rabbi, and expressed their appreciation for a West Bloomfield Schools program (Ambas- sadors of Goodwill) that promoted "Unity in the Community" — an institute sponsored program. For now, I'm serving as interim executive director of the institute. Interim means between the last direc- tor and the next, while the search committee does its job. The institute has made its decision about the future. In the meantime, what do we Jews need to do? Obviously we need to continue (or begin) our financial sup- port; we need to sponsor and attend the institute's programs; we need to host them and conduct them (and become prepared, if we're not already). We need to reach out to our Chris- tian friends, business associates, and neighbors for their help as well. All over this town are programs, lectures, church-synagogue tours, classes, ecu- menical trips to Israel (next one prob- ably in the fall of 1999), friend-raisers, publications, even an enormous library that bears the imprimatur of The Ecumenical Institute. We need to assure their continu- ance. And it's not ecumenical if we do it alone. Or we can do nothing ... and go back to the days we didn't have Jim's dream. But then we'd have to undo all those Jewish-Christian friend- ships, all that knowledge and learning, all that understanding, all that appre- ciation. And frankly, I really don't want to do that. ❑ Beautiful Breakthro The Natural Choice '" We're your wood floor specialists, featuring a great selec- tion of the most fashionable patterns and colors available.
