to Palestine in the early part of the
century to form kibbutzim, are suffer-
ing from an aging membership.
Naimark said each time she and her
husband Norman have attended an
LZA convention, there are fewer and
fewer numbers. She expects between

80 and 100 people at next week's con-
vention.
The LZA supports Israel's Labor
Party, the Oslo accords and religious
pluralism. But its funds support pro-
gramming and scholarships for study
in Israel, and community shlichim, or
emissaries, from Israel. Part of the
LZRs mission is
to educate people
about the Oslo
accords and to
promote activities
with Palestinians.
"Social democ-
racy, religious
pluralism and the
pursuit of peace
are the three
things that are
primary,
Naimark said.
"Many of our
present members,
the ones my age
or 10 years
younger, were
Habonim mem-
bers or went to
Camp Tavor. We
have a philosophy
that makes Israel
primary and at
the same time
promotes equal
rights and other
democratic values
in the United
States."
Helen has been
a member of the
LZA since she
married Norman
Naimark over 50
years ago.
"We were brought up in an
environment where Israel was
central to our lives. It's relevant
[today] because we have a differ-
ent kind of voice than the ZOA
(Zionist Organization of
America), for example, which is
much further right than we are.
There needs to be a voice like this
in the Zionist movement.
Whether Zionism is relevant or
not today, the fact is this is a
group that is totally dedicated to
Israel." ❑
