Detroit was also chosen because of its
relatively central location. Past con-
ventions have been held in New York,
where most LZA members are con-
centrated.
But the 90-year-old organization
also recognizes that its future is in the
hands of younger members, and
Detroit happens to have an active
chapter of Habonim, the youth divi-
sion of the LZA, and ex-Habonim
members, Naimark pointed out.
"We can see that where there's
young people, there's hope," she said.
The Labor Zionists, political heirs
he future is the focus of the
Labor Zionist Alliance's
national convention.
Detroit was chosen to
host the event for a few reasons, the
main one being that its LZA member-
ship is a vital mix of young and old,
said Emma Raymont, administrative
officer of the national LZA.
The weekend-long event, from June
5-8, begins with a Shabbat service
Saturday morning and wraps up
Sunday with a performance
by the Klezmer Fusion band.
Activities take place at the
Westin Hotel (formerly the
Radisson) in Southfield.
The convention will focus
on Zionism here and in
Israel and their interrelation-
ship. Speakers and guests
include U.S. Senator Carl
Levin, who will provide the
d'var Torah at Saturday ser-
vices; Samuel Norich, gener-
al manager of the Forward
newspaper, who will deliver
the keynote speech Saturday;
and Daniel Mann, national
president of the LZA in the
United States.
Raymont will be part of a
panel of young leaders
Saturday who will discuss
how to make Labor Zionism
relevant to younger people
throughout their lives, from
after they leave summer camp
or when they finish college.
The public event starts at
3 p.m. Sunday with speeches
Daniel Mann, national president of the Labor
from Yehiel Leket, co-chair-
Zionist
Alliance in the United States, will be in
