udith Wiser, the first Jewish
woman elected to the board of
trustees of Oakland
Community College, is seek-
ing a third term.
She said she wants to send a mes-
sage in her re-election bid: More
Jewish students should take advantage
of OCC's five campuses.
"The Jewish community doesn't real-
ize how much is here for them," said
Wiser, chairperson of the board. "Jewish
students take classes over the summer,
but I'm trying to get the community to
enroll for more during the year."
Wiser, first elected in 1986, will
run in the county-wide school board
elections on June 8. The race is non-
partisan.
The West Bloomfield resident has
not only been a part of running the
college network, but has taught and
been a student there as well.
"I taught ballet here, and once I
became a trustee, I got a degree in
applied science and a paralegal certifi-
cate," she said. "Even though we have
lawyers on staff, the course gave me
some insight and ability to understand
legal discussions."
Wiser is trying to get more students
to attend the two-year college she rep-
resents. One way is by improving
OCC's technology.
"Technology is so pervasive, we
need to watch to make sure we stay on
the cutting edge," she said. "We are
developing a technology plan at the
moment to promote the college and
get more enrollment."
Wiser and incumbents Anne Scott
and Janice Simmons are being chal-
lenged by Rochelle Heyniger, a student,
and Mel Vaara, former assistant super-
intendent of schools in Clarkston.
Vaara, who has attended OCC
board meetings, said he got the impres-
sion that the current group doesn't get
along. "I don't think they work well
together," he said. "I've sat at a board
table for many years and we got along.

representative, but didn't get a voice or
a vote," she said. "It was difficult to sit
on the board and not be able to speak
on the issues that directly involve me as
a student, taxpayer and member of the

community at large."
Among Heyniger's supporters is
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks
Patterson, who is her honorary cam-
paign chairman.
Vaara, who does not know Wiser
personally, said that at a May 18 meet-
ing Wiser didn't vote on the chancel-
lor's contract, which "blew my mind."
As chairperson, Wiser votes last or
has the privilege not to vote if it
would not tip the scales either way.
The vote on the contract was 4-2.
According to Wiser, she has
refrained from voting twice, but only
because her vote would not have made
a difference.
