mid contentious issues of
finance, curriculum and res-
idency, four Jewish candi-
dates have filed for seats in
the June 8 school board elections in
Walled Lake, West Bloomfield and
Farmington Hills.
In interviews last week, the candi-
dates talked about what they see as the
key issues in improving education in
their communities and the decisions
they would push the districts to make.
"Walled Lake schools have had to
redistrict every few years because of
the phenomenal growth in the area,"
said Michael Karson, who has lived
for 15 years in West Bloomfield.
"Students in the district should be
well prepared for college, or to get a
job out of high school."
The Walled Lake school district
encompasses parts of West Bloomfield,
Commerce Township, Novi,
Wolverine Lake, Wixom, White Lake,
Orchard Lake and Farmington Hills.
One of Karson's concerns is putting
into place a better system of funding
for the district. "The voters of
Michigan picked Proposal A, which
guaranteed parity in state funding of
schools," he said. "Walled Lake could
have long-term problems if revisions
aren't made."
When a child comes into a Walled
Lake school after the year starts,
Karson explained, the district has to
find the money for the child until the
state reimbursement, almost $7,000 a
child, arrives in February. "With that
system, the district will start to have
shortfalls," said Karson, who hopes to
unseat either Thomas McConnell or
Randolph Ston, both incumbents
seeking re-election.
