no-scalpel vasectomy technique. He
said China developed the procedure
in the 1970s as part of the push to
curb population growth.
"The Chinese government was
1-poking for a birth control method
that was efficient, harmless, and as
painless as possible so that couples
would be encouraged to consider ster-
ilization," explained Dr. Kushner.
"They invented a method in which
no incision is made, thus the name
no-scalpel vasectomy. It doesn't
require stitches, results in less
swelling, has virtually no bleeding,
there are fewer complications."
In a vasectomy, the tube — called
a vas deferens — is cut, clipped and
cauterized to stop the passage of
sperm from the testicle to the penis.
The testes continue to produce
sperm, but it is simply reabsorbed
into the body.
