than in the past, said Weiss.
"Shavuot has always been one of
the most fundamental and important
holidays in the calendar, but it does-
n't have a lot of physical rituals and
symbols attached to it, so for a lot of
Jews it kind of fell by the wayside,"
he said. "A lot of Jews didn't observe
Shavuot because they didn't know
how to connect to it, but as we see an
increased interest in Jewish study and
spirituality — the pieces most tied to
Shavuot — interest in the holiday
grows too."

Shavuot all-nighters, that is. Tikkun

launching Shavuot, which celebrates
the giving of the Torah at Mount

Weiss, who moved to Detroit from
Atlanta last fall, is planning Shaarey

sunrise services in the
Southfield synagogue's
courtyard.
"It's a very spiritually
uplifting experience, espe-
cially when the sun comes
up," said Weiss, adding
that Shavuot is one of his
favorite holidays.
The long night will
feature a variety of study
sessions, singing, con-
sumption of high-energy
food and, of course, caf-
feinated beverages.
Sunrise services will be
preceded by a traditional
chuppah ceremony cele-
brating the spiritual mar-
riage between God and

B'nai Moshe hosted an all-nighter
last year as well.
