Plus the taste and innovativeness, a
big thing is that all 78 recipes have

HIS 1979 INTRODUCTION to
"Detroit bar-b-q ribs," as he called
them, came about when Peter Ginop-
olis told Frank Sinatra about Excal-
ibur Restaurant, says the recent new-
lywed.
Sinatra was appearing at Pine
Knob when one of his entourage,
Gus Pantelli, called Peter asking
where Sinatra could be taken for din- <
ner ... Since Peter and Johnny Ginop-
olis at the time didn't have a restau-
rant like their present one (Ginopolis'
was just a little shot and a beer spot,)
Peter suggested taking Sinatra and
the others to Excalibur, owned then
by his friend Pat Archer (Sinatra's
close associates included good pal
Jilly Rizzo and comedian Pat Henry,
who almost always opened Sinatra's
shows.)
Since that 1978 date, Johnny and
Peter were together with Sinatra for
dinner a couple of more times ... at
Mama Gino's in the Palm Springs sub-
urb of Palm Desert.
Johnny remembers when Sinatra
was appearing at Caesar's Palace in Las
Vegas ... The late, great singer was sit-
ting in a lounge when he spotted
Johnny and Gus ... "We spent two or
three hours talking about everything,"
says Johnny, "and it sure was a won-
derful experience because of Sinatra's
warm, down-to-earth personality."
The first time Johnny and Peter
sent their Montgomery ribs to Sinatra
was after they received a call from a
gal who did his cooking ... "Mr. Sina-
tra would like some of your ribs," she
said ... No sooner said than done and
the Montgomerys were shipped to his
complex at Rancho Mirage on Frank
Sinatra Street in Palm Springs.

rey Gould ... on their 60th anniver-
sary. ❑
